Mr. Varney's Math Help

AP Calculus is designed to simulate and give you the opportunity to experience and hopefully get credit for a college level class.
Many students are unsure as to what Calculus is. Basically, as you will find out, it's the culmination of all the math classes you have taken so far. We will cover problems that involve rates of rate of change, optimization of numerous values, related rates, motion of objects, as well as many others. Think of calculus as tool for an explanation of problems that would otherwise be very difficult to solve.
If that didn't clear things up, don't worry we have a whole year to sort it out. As you will find out there are actually two kinds of calculus, differential and integral. They are closely related, but are useful for very different problems.
We will start with a quick review of past topics (hopefully it is review), then we will begin to dive into differential calculus. Around December or January, we will begin to start integral calculus.
As you may have noticed, I have posted a general outline of our schedule for the week as well as several Youtube clips that are related to what we are covering. Also, I will post important dates for the AP Test & Registration.
One last note... this class will take some effort outside of class. Do not expect to simply come to class, take notes, and be able to succeed. You will need to spend some time reviewing facts. There are some that, while tedious, are just necessary that you know like the back of your hand.
A suggestion that I have that helped me in calculus and other college level classes is to form study groups. Once or twice a week meet with other students in the class to review notes, ask questions, bounce ideas off each other. Trust me...you don't fully understand something until you can teach it to someone else.
And don't forget I am here for help! Don't be scared to ask. I want you to succeed!
Welcome to AP Calculus!!
